The topics of the meeting involve the biology and chemistry of bacterial carbohydrates, i.e., the glycobiology of bacterial molecules, a discipline employed in the structure and function analysis and synthesis of bacterial glycoconjugates. Glycobiology of microorganisms spans the problems in the field of chemistry, immunology, genetics, microbiology, medicine and other disciplines. Bacterial carbohydrates as polysaccharides and glycoconjugates take part in intermolecular and intercellular interactions, signal transduction, processes of infection and immunity. Sugars are used for syntheses of therapeutics, drug carriers and stabilisers, vaccines, antibiotics. Methodology is highly developed in glycobiology, involving nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, surface plasmon resonance, high resolution mass spectrometry, electron and atomic force microscopy, capillary electrophoresis, high performance chromatography as well as computer data bases and molecular modelling. In Poland, the tradition of carbohydrate investigations goes back to Jakub Parnas who contributed in studies of glycolysis called Embden-Meyerhof-Parnas metabolic pathway. A series of conferences on glycobiology were organised in Warsaw (1971), Jabłonna (1972, 1973) and Wrocław (1977) when Prof. Krystyna Kotełko was a Chairperson of Commission of Immunochemistry of Polish Academy of Sciences. Since 1983, small national meetings have been occurring biannually, initiated and organised by Prof. Wiesław Szeja, in the field of chemistry of sugars with elements of glycobiology, called School on Carbohydrates. After the International Symposium on Glycoconjugates held in Kraków in 1993, the parallel glycoconjugate meetings have been organised by Prof. Jerzy Kościelak, focused more on tissue glycoconjugates. In 1995 our Laboratory of Medical Microbiology was an organiser of the VII School on Carbohydrates in Książ, with a main topic centred on problems of carbohydrates in infection and immunity. It was in 1998 in Ustroń, during the IX meeting of this series, when Professors Yuriy Knirel, Otto Holst, Leon Backinowsky, Wiesław Szeja and Andrzej Gamian established a shape of a German-Polish-Russian (GPR) Meeting on Bacterial Carbohydrates. The overall goals were to a) intensify the exchange of, and the collaboration between, scientists of these three countries and b) realise the concept of Prof. Otto Holst to establish a Baltic Meeting on Bacterial Carbohydrates. The 1st and 2nd GPR Meetings took place in 2000 at the Research Center Borstel (Borstel, Germany) and in 2002 at the Zelinsky Institute of Organic Chemistry in Moscow. Both Meetings have served as a platform for the exchange of the latest knowledge on the chemistry and biochemistry of bacterial carbohydrates and related topics. Scientists presented news and views from several aspects of bacterial carbohydrate chemistry and biochemistry. The 3rd GPR Meeting on Bacterial Carbohydrates will be organised by the Hirszfeld Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy of Polish Academy of Sciences in Wrocław. Due to the relevance of the subject of the Meetings to biomedical sciences and the remarkable interest expressed during the two previous Meetings, the formula of the 3rd GPR Meeting is planned to be expanded by merging with the 1st Baltic Meeting on Bacterial Carbohydrates at the same time. The idea is that the Meetings are planned to occur biannually, at low cost, in familiar atmosphere, where up-to-date recent, possibly unpublished work could be presented and discussed in detail and information from the frontiers of organic chemistry, biochemistry and medical chemistry could be gained. Preferably presentations from all fields of bacterial carbohydrate chemistry and biochemistry will be accepted. The Meetings in the form of a workshop will encourage young researchers and colleagues from East European countries to participate and present their work. We hope that our symposium will meet the interest of scientists and we cordially invite you to participate in this symposium.
